The Bar and Restaurant at the Plough

The Plough has been dispensing refreshments to weary travellers since 1498 and continues to do so today in the same way it did all those years ago, with the best of local produce and the warmest of Yorkshire welcomes. In fact, monks were known to serve their brews through the small window in the wall of our dining room in the 1400s and 1500s and we keep this tradition, albeit from the bar now!

The oldest part of the building is now our lovely dining room, with the separate bar area in the 'newer' (1852) part of the building, where well-behaved dogs are always welcome. Our food offering is the cornerstone of what the pub is all about, taking classic dishes and giving them our own modern interpretation. It is food you can identify with, in a style that has been slowly and carefully crafted over nearly twenty years.

The care, effort and standards put into the food has gained us a reputation whereby many of our customers now travel significant distances to enjoy lunch or dinner. Our food offerings and service have gained many industry awards along the way. Awards aside, the driving principle behind our food is, ultimately, the joy and satisfaction of our customers.

Richard cooks alone in the kitchen. You are cooked for personally. No short cuts, no gimmicks. Almost all of our food is made from scratch, including all ice creams, sorbets, sauces, the lot! This is now somewhat of a rarity within the restaurant world, but we would not have it any other way.

We are not overly interested in following the constant changes in food trends or challenging our customers with the weird and the wonderful. We are more concerned with the reputation gained for our generosity and the care put into our food. We offer you lovely dishes that are always big on flavour, and texture, and are lovingly presented. Richard does not use tweezers when arranging the food!

Lindsey is the face of the restaurant. As passionate and dedicated to offering her guests fantastic, friendly service, as Richard is about the food standards. She is always on hand to guide you through the menu and to assist with any wine suggestions you may require.

As many of our long time customers know, Lindsey takes huge pride in curating her wine list, along with being passionate about maintaining the perfect pint from the bar. Often to be found in the cellar, tending to her various beer casks and barrels, her attention to detail means you are in very safe hands!

Whatever the occasion, we are ready to help you enjoy a quick drink, romantic dinner for two, all the way to your big birthday celebration and indeed small wedding receptions. Get in touch to find out what we can do for you.
